No assumed number

In Toki Pona, nouns by themselves are not assumed to be singular or plural. Depending on the context, a word like kili could mean either kumquat or kumquats.

mi jo e kili suli. I have a big turnip.
I have big turnips.


Basic numbers

The basic number words in Toki Pona are:

ala zero, no
wan one
tu two
mute several, many
ale all, infinite, also any overwhelmingly large number


Word order

Model: noun + number

Place the number word after the thing you're counting.

sike tu two balls
sike mute seven balls
mi I, we
mi wan I (but not we)
mi mute we (but not I)


Zero

Zero is the absence of something. Use ala, meaning no.

palisa moku sausage or sausages
palisa moku ala no sausages, zero sausages
